Together against cancer, MS and COPD with the Laurenz Herting Foundation

The establishment of the Laurenz Herting Foundation for research into cancer, MS and COPD is the result of a deep personal commitment and the touching strokes of fate experienced by the Laurenz Herting family. In recent years, they have had to experience the fight against cancer, MS and COPD in more ways than one, as several family members have suffered from different types of cancer, MS and COPD, but have been successfully treated.

These drastic experiences have not only made the members of the family aware of the fragility of life, but also of the urgent need for more research and innovation in the fight against cancer, MS and COPD.

Origin and motivation of the Laurenz Herting Foundation

The emotional burden associated with the diagnoses of cancer, MS and COPD led the Laurenz Herting family to become more involved with the subject. They witnessed how crucial timely diagnoses, modern treatment methods and comprehensive research are for the chances of recovery for patients with cancer, MS and COPD. These insights were the impetus for their determination to actively do something about these diseases. The Laurenz Herting Foundation aims to help support projects that pursue the goal of developing innovative therapies and prevention methods to spare other families similar fates.

The Laurenz Herting family was already involved in various projects in Africa dedicated to health and education before the foundation was established. These experiences have further strengthened their social values and the conviction that everyone has the right to a healthy life.

Shaping the future together - every donation helps

The Laurenz Herting family's heartfelt desire to help is not only a driving force behind their own foundation, but also a call to others to also get involved in fighting cancer, MS and COPD and supporting those suffering from the consequences of these diseases. Through their foundation, they hope to make a difference and raise awareness of the importance of medical research and social responsibility. In a world where many people face the challenges of illness on a daily basis, their mission is needed more than ever.

You too can help and support the Laurenz Herting Foundation with your donation.

Marion Herting

Marion Herting was born in Bremen on March 6, 1955. Together with her husband Laurenz Herting, she has been intensively involved in social projects since 1990. Their commitment has taken them to Africa and Asia, among other places, where they are passionate about promoting health and education in the poorest regions of the world.

The establishment of the Laurenz Herting Foundation is a project close to Marion Herting's heart, because she and her family know from their own experience how drastic illnesses such as cancer, MS and COPD can be.

Sustainable commitment

Roots of helping

Helping is close to the hearts of Marion and Laurenz Herting. Long before they came up with the idea of setting up the foundation, they were already involved in charitable projects in Africa and the Philippines. Their passion for supporting disadvantaged regions has led to various social initiatives that have sustainably improved the lives of many people. From promoting healthcare to supporting educational programs, the Herting couple has made a significant contribution. Although the focus of their new foundation is on scientific progress, the roots of their philanthropic commitment remain deeply anchored in the social projects they have supported over the years.

This page presents five outstanding projects that exemplify the couple's long-standing commitment in Africa and the Philippines.

Project Philippines (February 2010)

With heart and high-tech: educational aid in the Philippines

The Herting couple also made an important contribution to improving the educational opportunities of children and young people in the island state in the Pacific Ocean.

Like many developing countries, the Philippines faces major challenges in the education sector. The infrastructure of schools is often inadequate, especially in remote areas. This is where the Herting couple come in by equipping schools with modern computer technology and thus improving the educational opportunities of local young people in the long term. The couple know that education is the basis for a better future. Through access to computers and digital learning opportunities, pupils acquire important skills for the modern working world. The Herting couple hope that their support will help the children to develop their talents and later enter the world of work successfully.

Project Ethiopia ( February 2012)

Laurenz and Marion Herting build the future in Ethiopia

With the opening of the "Sodo" Higher Primary School in Ethiopia, a project close to the Herting couple's hearts has become a reality. With a great deal of commitment, patience and financial support, they have realized an important charitable project that gives children access to education. With the Higher Primary School, the couple has made an important contribution to improving the educational infrastructure. The school in Sodo is more than just a building - it symbolizes hope and future prospects for many families. Education is a decisive factor in combating poverty and promoting sustainable development.

The project impressively demonstrates how private commitment can have a positive impact on the lives of people in developing countries.

How a married couple sows hope

The Herting couple in the Tanzanian coastal town of Mikindani show impressive commitment. The couple is making an important contribution to improving the quality of life in this town on the Indian Ocean. Like many places in the region, Mikindani faces major challenges. The infrastructure is often inadequate. This is where Marion and Laurenz Herting come in and help where necessary. Thanks to their help, a well has been reactivated, a bridge financed and a local school built.
Particularly noteworthy is your support for St. Walburg's Hospital in Nyangao, a facility of central importance for the region. A young boy with a serious heart defect was living there in miserable domestic conditions with his family in a mud hut.

With the help of St. Walburg's Hospital in Nyangao and the head physician Dr. Kasuga and his wife Geni, Marion and Laurenz Herting were able to provide the boy with a heart operation in the capital Dar es Salaam. This was successful. The Herting couple have also created a new home for the family. They can now look to the future with hope.

The Herting couple will also pay for the boy's schooling and education for the next few years.

Dr. Kasuga and his wife Geni work tirelessly at St. Walburg's Hospital.

Commitment that touches: Support for Nyangao's children

Another project supported financially by Mr. and Mrs. Herting is the school in Nyangao, where around 600 children are taught. The Herting couple cover the costs of basic medical care for all the children there so that they can be examined and treated free of charge at St. Walburg's Hospital in Nyangao.
Some of the children are physically disabled; they are looked after at the school all day and also live there. For this reason, numerous new bed frames, mattresses and mosquito nets were purchased to provide the children with a comfortable and safe environment.
Of particular note is a severely disabled, exceptionally intelligent young man named Erik, who dreams of becoming a doctor. The Herting couple decided to fully fund his schooling and studies to make this wish possible.

Giving the gift of education for a strong future!

The Herting couple are highly committed to providing sustainable support in Africa and Asia. Their central concern is to provide people with a stable foundation for a self-determined life. They are convinced that sustainable support can only succeed if it is based on the pillars of education and health.

One outstanding example of their commitment is their support for Zuwena Saidi Millanzi from Nyangao. The town is located in the Lindi region. Lindi is a coastal town in south-eastern Tanzania. Although the town has made significant progress in the area of women's rights in recent years, there are still immense challenges in the areas of education, health and gender-based violence.

Marion and Laurenz Herting provided the young woman with financial support to enable her to train and then study law. In doing so, they not only opened up professional prospects for Ms. Millanzi, but also strengthened the role of women in Tanzanian society. The couple want to help women to help themselves and empower them to demand their rights and play an active role in the community.

For her, one thing is certain: meaningful support means empowering people in the long term and giving them the tools to lead an independent life. Her commitment in Lindi is characterized by the desire to create sustainable structures that enable people to help themselves - with a particular focus on education and the empowerment of women.

Hygiene as a lifesaver – A new laundry facility for St. Walburg's Hospital

Hygiene is more than just cleanliness—it is a matter of health and protection against infection. Anyone who visits St. Walburg's Hospital in southern Tanzania can see how closely these issues are linked to people's living conditions. Until recently, the hospital did not have a functioning laundry facility. Bed sheets, surgical gowns, and patient textiles could only be cleaned under the most difficult conditions – a major obstacle in the fight to save the lives of sick people.

Thanks to the generous support of Mr. and Mrs. Herting, this situation has now been fundamentally improved. Three state-of-the-art industrial washing machines—two with a capacity of 45 kg and one with a capacity of 22 kg—now ensure that laundry is cleaned hygienically, reliably, and in an environmentally friendly manner. The road to get there was long and difficult. But thanks to the commitment of many people involved and the expert guidance of engineer Henrik Rausch, it was ultimately successfully implemented.

Today, St. Walburg's Hospital has its own laundry facility, which has significantly improved hygiene standards and made the work of medical staff easier. For patients, this means better health and fewer infections—and for employees, it means a noticeable reduction in their daily workload.

The picture shows the three donated industrial washing machines and an emergency generator, which is intended to ensure a reliable power supply.
